Information Updates

From Chris Busby on 12/22/09:
I wanted to send everyone an update on the Uganda trip.

When we had our initial meeting back in November, I had mentioned that my goal was to be able to have specific information regarding the mission by early December. Well, obviously mid December has passed and the end of the year is fast approaching. I am currently in a holding pattern waiting to have a debriefing meeting with the team leader from NW Hills church who returned from their trip a week ago. It does not look like we will be meeting until January.  Since the timing of the trip has been changed from July to August, we still have a fair amount of time. However, once we get the specifics for the trip, we will need to start planning and training immediately after.

At our Missions Fair a few weeks ago, I asked people to come forward who were either committed to being on the team, or were seriously considering it. I know we don’t have a lot of information yet to fully base a decision on, but I would like everyone who is either committed to go or considering, to reply to me and let me know.

Before you respond, I would like everyone to consider a few issues:

1.       Even though we don’t have a firm cost yet for the trip, it will probably be at least $3500 per person. If you make a commitment to go on the trip, you are also making a commitment to raise the funds necessary to go. As I mentioned at the first meeting, our plan is to raise funds on both an individual basis, as well as on a group basis. But whatever amount is not raised from donations/fund raisers/church assistance, the individual needs to be ultimately responsible for any balance.

2.       I was pleasantly surprised at the level of interest in the trip. However, with the number of people who have expressed interest, we may end up having to limit the size of the group. Right now we have @17 people who are interested. It becomes increasingly difficult to plan logistics for that size of a group (Have everyone on the same flights with connections, ground transportation, accommodations, food, etc). As much as it pains me, I may have to limit the group to @ 10 people. I’m not sure the best way to handle this, but it may come down to a “first come, first served” basis, based on the first 10 who commit. I just wanted people to know this is a possibility. I will not know for sure until I hear back from Moses Otim. It may end up not being an issue.  Those not able to go on this trip would get priority on our next trip.

3.       After discussing it with several people, I feel that we need to have a minimum age of 18, unless accompanied by a parent. We will be traveling half way around the world, in a developing country and we will be spending some time in an area of Uganda that the US State Dept recommends Americans not travel to. The level of responsibility and liability for us would be too great by taking a minor.

4.       Since there will be a fair amount of training and planning for our trip, we will start regular training meetings soon after logistics are finalized (Hopefully by the end of January). It is very important for everyone going on the trip to attend the training meetings. We will be spending time teaching about history, culture, a small amount of language, spiritual instruction, teaching methods, travel and packing instructions and many other issues. I will try to plan the meetings to fit our schedules as much as possible. I don’t know if they will be on the weekends or weekday evenings, but they will take place at least once a month, and probably more frequently starting in June. Please take into consideration your ability to attend the training meetings.

5.       I feel that it is also very important for the members of the team to attend church regularly. For those that are away at school, we would need to know that you are attending church on a regular basis. For those that are local, you need to be part of our regular Sunday morning service.

I am also attaching the information I handed out at our first meeting for those who were not able to attend.

If anyone has any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. If anyone would like to meet one on one to discuss the trip, I would love the opportunity.

Again, please let me know what your expectations are at this point regarding going to Uganda.
