Here is a little bit of info on Ethiopia, the country our youth group chose to donate our funding to:

Ethiopia
Country Statistics
Population  77.4 million
Land Mass  432,310 sq. miles
Life Expectancy  49 years
Infant Mortality Rate  109 / 1,000
Literacy Rate  42%
School Enrollment  31%
Access to Safe Water  22%
Average Annual Income (GNI per capita)  US$160
The East African country of Ethiopia is bordered by Somalia to the north, Djibouti and Eritrea to the east, Kenya to the south, and Sudan to the west. Unlike most African nations, it was never a European colony.

Approximately 90 percent of the country’s residents earn their living as subsistence farmers. They grow just enough food to feed their families and cannot purchase many essential items.

Educational opportunities are limited. Only 31 percent of children between the ages of 7 and 15 attend school. Many people lack access to health care. Important services like schools and medical facilities are often found only in urban areas. World Vision is helping Ethiopia’s families by making improvements to their food security and water programs, education, and health care.

Ethiopia has been important to the modern history of Africa as a symbol of independence. In the last 25 years, the Ethiopian people have faced difficult upheavals, including major famines, which took the lives of two million people.

Please pray for God to bless us as we go without food so others can eat!
Thank you and if you have any questions or comments please feel free to email or call me at mrsbrynnharms@gmail.com 503-936-3707

Thanks again!

Southern Baptists mobilize to help earthquake victims
Southern Baptists are mobilizing to assess disaster relief needs after the largest earthquake in more than 200 years rocked Haiti the evening of Jan. 12.
The initial Southern Baptist disaster relief effort will be led by Florida Baptists, who have had ministry relationships in Haiti for more than 20 years and currently have six staff members who live and work in the country, said Jim Brown, U.S. director for Baptist Global Response, a Southern Baptist relief and development organization. The International Mission Board does not have long-term personnel stationed in the country.
Initial funding for the relief effort will be provided by the IMB’s disaster relief fund. You can contribute to the disaster response effort at gobgr.org.
The North American Mission Board’s disaster relief office is organizing an emergency consultation with state disaster relief directors to coordinate response to the catastrophe, Brown said. Disaster relief teams in Mississippi and Kentucky are on standby for immediate response.
An assessment team is being organized by Baptist Global Response, IMB, NAMB and state convention disaster relief directors to enter the country as soon as possible, Brown said. They will work with Haitian Baptists to identify immediate needs that must be addressed and will draft mid- and long-term plans for an ongoing relief effort.
The 7.0 magnitude tremor hit 10 miles from the center of Port-au-Prince, a city of 3 million people, at around 5 p.m. Jan. 12, according to news reports. One source said the quake could be felt more than 200 miles away. The earthquake triggered a tsunami watch for Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Cuba.
Multiple strong aftershocks continued to rock the country after the initial tremor, said David Brown, who with his wife, Jo, directs BGR work in the Americas. Reports from inside the country indicate infrastructure and many buildings suffered catastrophic damage. The main airport is closed; power and communications are down and security is a serious concern. Specialized search and rescue teams and military units from several countries are being rushed into Haiti to help secure the situation and begin relief efforts.
Apart from donating to the disaster relief effort via gobgr.org, you can help greatly by joining in focused prayer for Haiti’s 9 million people, more than 80 percent of whom live below the poverty line, said David Brown.
“Please pray for us as we assess and monitor the situation in Haiti after the 7.0 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks this evening,” Brown said. “The initial information indicates 2 million people in Port-au-Prince are directly affected. Please pray for victims and their families. Pray for wisdom as responses are initiated.”
The situation in Haiti is very fluid and additional information will continue to flow in on a daily basis, Brown said. Updates will be released as new information becomes available.
Prayer updates will also be available.

Concert will benefit infant's medical fund

Voices of Hope Choir will perform a benefit concert at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Creekside Bible Church, 22100 S.W. Grahams Ferry Road, to help offset medical expenses for the family of Leah Grace Jarmer.

She was born March 30 with alobar holoprosencephaly (HPE), which means that her brain did not form properly and she has severe cerebral abnormalities. HPE causes seizures, lack of pituitary function and additional challenges. Her mother said doctors did not think she would be born alive, but she just turned 2 months old.

Leah is the daughter of Luke and Kristine Jarmer and the granddaughter of Pastor Rick Jarmer of Boones Ferry Community Church. Admission to the concert is free, but donations will be taken for Leah's medical fund. Concert-goers may want to arrive early as seating is limited.

"I just want our experience with Leah to be an encouragement to those who are also facing a poor prenatal diagnosis to not lose hope and to have the courage to move forward even in the face of loss," said Kristine Jarmer in an e-mail.

Creekside Bible Church Moves to Tualatin

TUALATIN - Creekside Bible Church announces its move which was effective June 29th to Tualatin after a 23 year presence in Wilsonville. The move to Tualatin is in part necessitated by Creekside’s desire to develop property at the intersection of Boones Ferry and Day Road into a community-centered facility.  Creekside’s new meeting location, 22100 SW Grahams Ferry Road, is 1.5 miles from the location of the property.

Creekside has been partnering with Christ Community Church to offer a range of programs on Wednesday nights for children and adults, and most recently co-hosted “Outrigger Island” Vacation Bible Camp.  As Youth Pastor Chad Harms observes, “God is allowing us the opportunity to break down denominational lines, working for the good of the community and His glory.”

Senior Pastor Greg Miller, his wife Jeanne and their two daughters have been residents of Tualatin for 15 years, and they look forward to deepening the connections they have made in their community and local schools.  “Our church family is looking forward to serving and caring for the people of Tualatin as we continue our ministry in Wilsonville and Sherwood.  Our goal as a Church is to love God and love others, and our move to Tualatin is going to give us the opportunity to show God’s love to more people”, notes Pastor Greg.  His summer teaching series “God is Closer Than You Think”, and upcoming fall series “Building Loving Relationships” both focus on practically loving God and loving others.

Creekside offers a range of activities weekly, including Sunday Worship from 9-10am concurrent with “Worship Kidstyle” and childcare, Wednesday night “Room For One” Youth program 6:30-8:30pm, “Thursday Thursdays” at 8pm for Young Adults, local home-based adult groups, weekly Men’s Fellowship Breakfasts, and Women’s Bible Studies and special events.

In addition, members of Creekside regularly participate in community activities including “REST” ministry to local homeless adults, serving meals at Wilsonville Senior Center, and providing Sunday Services for residents of Wilsonville Assisted Living Center.
Information about Creekside is available at www.creeksidebiblechurch.org, or by calling (503) 682-1197.
