Thanks Jacob. I appreciate you reading my first post.

As I said, I don't think that promotion of the church is wrong in and of itself. For example, I think it is practical/logical/good for a church website to include directions to and times of their services. My issue is with churches promoting themselves ABOVE God and the Gospel. Not many churches would openly claim to doing this but, in reality it appears that many do. Don't get me wrong, I don't know what the perfect balance is. This is something that wrestle with in my own heart. As a pastor I often wonder how much time we should spend focusing on our social networking presence, quality of our website, SEO optimization, etc. I fully recognize that getting people into church is an important part of helping them become a part of God's church. For me, it feels like a very fine line. The thing I do - we should make God the focus.

I would ask this: Should church be a business?

I agree that it would not be good for everyone to spend all of their time spreading the Word. But, I do think that when people go to their jobs, they should be doing it for God. This doesn't mean that they will spend all day talking about Jesus (this would make them a bad employee). I think it means they work in a way that is pleasing to God and focus on making their money for God. I guess this is similar to what I was trying to say about church. When we build a website, no matter what content is on it, the goal should be the spreading of the Gospel.

Good read Chad. It does seem like the main purpose of a church's website would be the same as the main purpose of the church, but a church is a business as well and each part has to serve its purpose. If everyone at the church spent all of their time spreading the word, who would pay the bills and cash the checks?
